Plant Project

The children created a presentation about plants using ChatterPix. Check out our video to learn about the parts of a plant. I think you will agree that each part of a plant is very important!

Division strategies

Last week during math,  we finished Chapter 8: Division. During this unit the students used related multiplication facts to divide. They also practiced dividing 2-digit numbers with and without remainders. This was the students first exposure to long division and something that we will continue to practice throughout the year.

This is the type of problem the children practiced solving.
For this activity, the class worked with  a partner to solve the problem using as many different strategies as they could. One strategy was to use manipulatives and create equal groups.

Another strategy was to draw a picture.

Some groups used long division to solve the problem.

Repeated subtraction was one other strategy shared by a classmate.

We discussed that there are often many ways to solve a math problem.
Many students shared that knowing  multiplication facts makes division easier, so please continue to encourage fact practice at home.

Bundle Up!

It is our hope to get the children out for recess whenever possible. In order that children are appropriately dressed, please remind them to bring a hat and gloves to school. Also, your child must bring snow pants and boots if they would like to play in the snow. If your child wears boots to school, please have them bring shoes to change into for the day. Since there are many pairs of black or blue snow pants, please put your child's name on their belongings. Finally, I have suggested to the children to leave a sweater, sweatshirt or fleece in their locker just in case they get cold during the day. Our primary concern is that the children are warm, dry and comfortable throughout the day
