Red Sox Spirit Day!

Tomorrow is a Red Sox Spirit Day. Remember to wear Red Sox shirts or Red Sox colors to show your team spirit! Go Red Sox!

Photosynthesis Project

This week the student's used the iPads to teach others about photosynthesis. First, the children drew a plant and labeled the steps of photosynthesis. Then, either Mrs. Klipfel or myself recorded the students explaining the process of photosynthesis. The class loved working on this project! Please check back soon and you will be able to view their projects.

Halloween Party

We will have our Halloween Party on Thursday, October 31^st from 2-2:45. The class has been working hard and is looking forward to the party!  There will be time prior to the party for the children to change into their costumes. The school discourages violent costumes, props and make up. Please feel free to drop by and join us for our celebration.

Math-Addition up to 10,000

The students have been learning to add two 4-digit numbers to 10,000 with and without regrouping. We used base-ten blocks and place value charts, then practiced finding the sum in vertical form. The children have also solved real-world problems involving addition.

Science

The class has been learning about the parts of a plant. So far we have learned about the roots, stem and leaves. Last week, the students learned about photosynthesis. The children learned that photosynthesis is how green plants make food. During the next week, each child will be creating a project using the iPads to demonstrate their understanding of the five steps of photosynthesis.

Tipi Talks Part 2

During the afternoon session, the children had an opportunity to look at artifacts from various tribes.  They also learned about the everyday life and customs of many tribes, including those that lived in the surrounding area.

Cultural Enrichment -Tipi Talks

At the end of September, the Third Grade participated in the Cultural Enrichment Program, Tipi Talks. During the first session the children worked together and built a tipi. This activity required cooperation and good listening skills. I'm proud to report the children were amazing!

Study Island

Today the class was introduced to Study Island! This is a web-based program that focuses on the Third Grade standards. Your child was given two papers to share with you explaining Study Island, which include their username and password. Once your child logs in, they can change their password. The homework for tonight is to take the English Language Arts Pre-Test. As I am new to to the program as well, I don't know how long the Pre-Test will take to complete. I explained to the class that if the Pre-Test takes longer than 30 minutes that reading will be optional for tonight. The children should complete the Pre-Test independently,  as the lessons they complete going forward will be determined by the Pre-Test. As with any homework, if your child has difficulty or is unable to compete it in 30 minutes please let me know.

Parent Seminar

     Parent Seminar for third grade parents will be held on Wednesday, September 18th from 6:00-6:45. At this time, I will share information about our classroom, third grade and the curriculum that will be taught this year. I look forward to meeting each of you and hope that you will be able to attend.

Science

On September 10th each student had a chance to plant Brassica seeds. This will allow us to observe the stages of plant growth right in our classroom.The children were very excited to plant and each morning rush in to the classroom to see how much their plants have grown.

Welcome 

     We’ve had a successful start to the school year! During the first week, we made a list of class rules and have been busy learning classroom routines. I’ve enjoyed getting to know each of the children and am looking forward to a great year!

Parent Seminar

     Parent Seminar for third grade parents will be held on Wednesday, September 18^th from 6:00-6:45. At this time, I will share information about our classroom, third grade and the curriculum that will be taught this year. I look forward to meeting each of you and hope that you will be able to attend.

Homework

     Students should read for 15 minutes each night. If they don't have a book to read at home, they are welcome to borrow a book from our classroom library. Please initial your child's Reading Log each night. This week, the children are also decorating their Writing Notebook. They can use pictures, Clip Art, stickers and words to decorate their notebooks which will serve as a source of inspiration throughout the year. Notebooks must be completed and returned to school by Friday, September 13th.
