Valentine's Day Party

The class had a wonderful time celebrating Valentine's Day with a "Party in a Bag!"

Thank you to all  the families for making the children's party bags! They loved opening their bags, eating all of the delicious treats and reading their special messages from you!

Balloon Experiment

What state of matter is produced when you mix baking soda and carbon dioxide?

On Thursday, we used the scientific method to answer this question. Mrs. Corliss put vinegar in a bottle and used a funnel to put baking soda into a balloon. Next, she put the balloon on top of the bottle and tipped it. When the baking soda and vinegar mixed it bubbled and created a gas called carbon dioxide.

We were very excited about the experiment! We wanted to see how big the balloon would get!

We know we created a gas because it filled up the balloon.

Today we were scientists! We are looking forward to more science experiments.

Discovery Science Museum Visits Steward School

Last week the Discovery Science Museum visited Steward School and presented a matter workshop to the third grade. The students loved  all of the hands-on activities and remembered many facts they learned during our study of matter!
First, we had to figure out how to melt an ice cube. The students used their hands or breath to warm up the ice cube.

Adding heat or taking away heat changes the state of water.

We also observed some cool experiments with liquid nitrogen and dry ice.
Rubber bands freeze in liquid nitrogen!

Ask your child how Ms. Stella used a banana as a hammer and shrunk medal.

If students visit http://tinyurl.com/TSWactivity with their parents they can find some at-home science activities. If you complete the five question survey you will receive a FREE admission pass for the Discovery Science Museum. Thank you TESPTO for bringing this program to Steward School.
