Curriculum Update

During the past few weeks, we have been learning about biographies during reading. Some of the students read a biography about Albert Einstein, while others read about Barack Obama or Vincent Van Gogh.

During writing, we have been learning how to write an informational research report. For more information about our Presidents' Reports, please read the previous post.

Throughout the year, we have been learning about poetry and figurative language. The boys and girls have written some poems and we will be writing more in the next few weeks. On May 30th at 9:15 we will have a Poetry Share in  our classroom for our families. More information will be sent home about this event soon.

In math, we have been learning about fractions. The children learned to read, write and identify fractions. We practiced comparing fractions and identifying equivalent fractions for 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4. The students also learned to add and subtract like fractions. During our next math unit, we will study angles and lines. The children will learn the difference between a point, line segment and a line, They will also practice identifying right angles, parallel lines and perpendicular lines.

During science we have been learning about sound. First, we learned how sound is made. Then, we discussed the differences between volume and pitch. This can be hard for children to understand, so talk to your child about it in the car or while listening to music at home. Volume is the loudness or softness of sound and pitch is the highness or lowness of a sound.
