Hour of Code

On Tuesday our class participated in the Hour of Code. This is a global event to expose students to computer science. The boys and girls had to write the code of a video game. The children loved doing this! It was definitely challenging and required students to use problem solving and logical thinking skills. If the children would like to continue coding they can click on the link below.

They can also try the other challenges on the page, such as the Frozen Game or Star Wars.

The students were very focused!

Multiplication Websites

The children have been working hard to learn their multiplication tables. We have been playing math games, hopping on a number line, drawing arrays,  practicing with flash cards and demonstrating understanding by building facts with tiles. All of our hard work is paying off! I've notice everyone is getting quicker with their facts! I encourage the children to practice a few minutes every day.

Here are some great websites for practicing multiplication facts-

Halloween Party

We will have our Halloween Party on Friday, October 30th from 11:00-11:45. The class has been working hard and is looking forward to the party!  If you would like to send in something for the Halloween Party, please see the notice that was sent home on Friday and contact Mrs. Fullerton.

There will be time prior to the party for the children to change into their costumes. The school discourages violent costumes, props and make up. Please feel free to drop by and join us for our celebration.

Amazing Hero Art

On Thursday Rob Surette brought his Amazing Hero Art to Steward School. We were in awe of his speed and artistic talent! Rob shared a very important message too. He told the children that with practice anything is possible and he inspired everyone to make a difference in the world!

Rob painted this incredible portrait of Abraham Lincoln in three minutes!

Thank you to TESPTO for generously funding this Cultural Enrichment Program!

Curriculum Update

Here's an update of some of the learning that has been happening in Room 215.
Math-  During the past few weeks, the students have learned to add two 4-digit numbers to 10,000 with and without regrouping. They've  also practiced solving addition word problems.
Writing- The students are composing a personal narrative. We started by discussing seed ideas. A seed idea focuses on a small moment of time. The class also completed a graphic organizer and mapped out their thoughts on sticky notes to help them plan their writing. The children are currently revising their original writing by including more details and their thoughts and feelings to help the reader feel as if they are right there.
The students used sticky notes to help plan their narrative.
Reading-The class has been discussing character traits and how some characters change over time. Good readers think about the characters in a story to help them understand what they are reading.
Science- We continue to observe our plants and learn  about each  part of the plant. The class recently discussed photosynthesis and this week we are going to learn about seed dispersal.
Last week our plants went through a big growth spurt!

Welcome Back!

Welcome Back Comments
The first day of school is Thursday! The summer went by really fast, but I enjoyed every minute of it. This summer I read many books, went to the beach and spent a week in Maine. The best part of the summer was getting to spend lots of time with my family and friends.
This was my beautiful view in Maine. I loved swimming with my nieces and reading by the peaceful lake!

I am looking forward to the new school year. We will start the year learning about plants, place value and writing personal narratives.  We will also jump right into reading and start discovering wonderful books and and authors.

I can't wait to see all my new third graders on September 3rd. Remember to bring a nut free snack and your school supplies.  I love teaching third grade and this year is going to be so much fun!

Thank you!

Dear Students and Families,
It has been a pleasure to work with each of you. I would like to thank the parents for everything they did to make this past year special for the children. We were very fortunate to have many parents volunteer for Field Day and Fun Finale. I also appreciate the time given to chaperone field trips and help with class parties. Thank you to everyone who sent in supplies and prizes throughout the year. Most importantly thank you for sharing your amazing children with me!
I would like to thank the children for a remarkable and rewarding year. This class worked really hard and it was a delight to watch the children grow in so many ways.  I loved teaching this class and each of you will always have a special place in my heart. I would love to hear about your summer and 4th grade. If you’re ever at Steward School, please stop by and say hello. You may email me at scorliss@topsfieldps.org. I wish you a safe and happy summer!
                                        With Sincere Thanks,
